OWH Saturday Seminars #1: Focal points!

By sheer coincidence I had made this card a few days before the first OWH Saturday Seminar, in which Paula teaches us about creating a strong focal point. I wasn't thrilled with this card; although not completely awful, it struck me as rather ho-hum (although I had fun using my new Martha Stewart border punch, lol). After reading Paula's seminar lesson, I can see the problem is this card lacks a strong focal point. The eye doesn't know whether to travel to the flower, the sentiment, or the half pearls! So I made it my BEFORE card:

For my AFTER card, I used the same card base color and PP, but I changed the border lace to white because I thought the contrast is better. For the focal point, I decided to use the technique Paula discusses of grouping several images together, and I chose to make the focal point off center on the card. The cutout shapes are in a package from K&Co. that I found at Target. I'm much happier with this card.
Where is your eye drawn to on this card:

Great job Sherry! That was a great seminar - I have to go to work on my "after" card.

Much better. Great seminar. I like the white lace best too.

It really is helpful seeing the two cards together. Your new one has a much stronger focal point. The half pearls really do draw your eye away from the flowers. I never though of this before, so this class was really helpful.

My eye goes right to the little ribbon! Looks great Sherry :)

Great changes! I really like the scalloped oval behind the cut-outs which strengthens the whole focal point. I like the new card a lot.

Great to be able to see the "before and after" side-by-side. Grouping the elements really does create a solid focal point in your remake. Good job Sherry!

They are both really good cards, the focal point is much stronger on the second one. Great job!!

For me, the focal point is the little house, and then my eye goes to the bow and the flowers. I like the contrast of the white lace. And I didn't consciously notice the scalloped mat until I read the other comments, but it makes a big difference. Without the mat (in the first card) the embellishments kind of get lost in the patterned paper. A great example to learn from - thanks for sharing it!
